They Lied, Words Can Hurt

You have probably heard the old saying, "sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you." Wrong! It's because words have such a powerful effect that we devise defenses against them. If words truly did not matter we wouldn't put as much emphasis on the power of words. The Bible says that, "Life and death is in the power of the tongue." (Proverbs 18:21) James puts incredible emphasis on the power of the tongue by saying, "So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!" (James 3:5)
